Formula explanation

  1. Shift length = shift end time minus shift start time, with overnight shifts handled when the end time is earlier than the start time.
  2. Adult worker planning threshold = shift length over 6 hours, with a common planning guide of 20 break minutes.
  3. Young worker planning threshold = shift length over 4.5 hours, with a common planning guide of 30 break minutes.
  4. Estimated unpaid break value = planned break minutes divided by 60, multiplied by hourly rate. This is a planning estimate only.

Break review note

Use this to spot a shift that needs review before publish or sign-off. Keep current guidance, contract terms and site policy outside this public tool.
